Chapter 18Neural Control and Coordination
Resting potential: outside +, inside −; Na⁺ rushes in during an impulse.
1. Nervous System
- CNS (brain + spinal cord) and PNS (somatic + autonomic: sympathetic, parasympathetic).
- Neuron: dendrites → cell body → axon.
2. Nerve Impulse
- Resting potential ≈ −70 mV; Na⁺/K⁺ pump (3 Na⁺ out, 2 K⁺ in).
- Depolarisation: Na⁺ in; repolarisation: K⁺ out.
- Myelinated fibres: saltatory conduction (node to node).
- Synapse: electrical or chemical (neurotransmitters, e.g. acetylcholine).
3. Brain
| Part | Function |
|---|---|
| Cerebrum | thinking, memory, senses, voluntary actions |
| Thalamus | relay centre |
| Hypothalamus | temperature, hunger, hormones |
| Cerebellum | balance, posture |
| Medulla | breathing, heartbeat, reflexes |
4. Key Points
- Corpus callosum joins hemispheres.
- Reflex arc: receptor → sensory → spinal cord → motor → effector.
- Limbic system: emotions.
- Brain stem = midbrain + pons + medulla.
Remember: Resting vs action potential | synapse | brain parts
