Chapter 13Plant Growth and Development
Auxin roots, Gibberellin grows tall, Cytokinin divides, ABA stresses, Ethylene ripens.
1. Growth
- Phases: meristematic, elongation, maturation.
- Arithmetic and geometric growth; sigmoid curve.
- Differentiation, dedifferentiation, redifferentiation.
2. Plant Growth Regulators
| PGR | Main roles |
|---|---|
| Auxin (IAA) | rooting, apical dominance, parthenocarpy, weedicide (2,4-D) |
| Gibberellin (GA₃) | stem elongation, bolting, malting, seedless grapes |
| Cytokinin (kinetin) | cell division, delays senescence, new leaves |
| Ethylene | fruit ripening, abscission, flowering in pineapple |
| Abscisic acid (ABA) | stress hormone, stomatal closure, dormancy |
3. Photoperiodism & Vernalisation
- Short-day, long-day and day-neutral plants.
- Leaves sense photoperiod.
- Vernalisation: cold treatment promotes flowering.
4. Key Points
- Ethylene is gaseous.
- ABA antagonises GA.
- Kinetin discovered in autoclaved herring sperm DNA.
- Plasticity: heterophylly in cotton.
Remember: Growth phases | 5 PGRs and uses | photoperiodism
