Chapter 19Chemical Coordination and Integration

Pituitary is the master gland — but the hypothalamus controls it.

1. Endocrine Glands

GlandHormonesDisorders
Hypothalamusreleasing / inhibiting hormones—
PituitaryGH, TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH, PRL; ADH, oxytocin (posterior)gigantism, dwarfism, diabetes insipidus
Pinealmelatonin—
ThyroidT₃, T₄, calcitoningoitre, cretinism, Graves' disease
ParathyroidPTH (raises Ca²⁺)tetany
Thymusthymosins—
Adrenaladrenaline (medulla), cortisol, aldosterone (cortex)Addison's disease
Pancreasinsulin (β), glucagon (α)diabetes mellitus
Gonadstestosterone; oestrogen, progesterone—

2. Mechanism

  • Protein hormones: membrane receptors, second messenger (cAMP).
  • Steroid hormones: intracellular receptors, act on genes.

3. Key Points

  • Adrenaline: ‘fight or flight’.
  • Insulin lowers blood glucose.
  • Heart, kidney, GI tract also make hormones.
  • Iodine deficiency causes goitre.

Remember: Gland → hormone → disorder table | hormone action
