Chapter 5Morphology of Flowering Plants
Flower whorls outside in: Calyx, Corolla, Androecium, Gynoecium — “Can Cats Always Groom”.
1. Root, Stem, Leaf
- Tap root (dicots), fibrous (monocots), adventitious; modifications: storage (carrot), prop (banyan), stilt (maize), pneumatophores (Rhizophora).
- Stem modifications: tendril (cucumber), thorn (Bougainvillea), rhizome (ginger), tuber (potato), runner, sucker.
- Leaf: venation reticulate (dicot) / parallel (monocot); phyllotaxy alternate, opposite, whorled.
2. Inflorescence
- Racemose: main axis keeps growing, flowers acropetal.
- Cymose: main axis ends in a flower, basipetal.
3. Flower
| Feature | Types |
|---|---|
| Symmetry | actinomorphic (radial), zygomorphic (one plane) |
| Ovary position | hypogynous (superior), perigynous (half), epigynous (inferior) |
| Aestivation | valvate, twisted, imbricate, vexillary |
| Placentation | marginal, axile, parietal, free central, basal |
4. Fruit & Seed
- Parthenocarpic fruit develops without fertilisation.
- Mango: drupe (stony endocarp).
- Dicot seed: two cotyledons; monocot seed: scutellum, coleoptile, coleorhiza.
5. Floral Formulae
| Family | Example | Formula hints |
|---|---|---|
| Fabaceae | pea | zygomorphic, vexillary, diadelphous (9)+1 stamens |
| Solanaceae | potato, brinjal | actinomorphic, swollen axile placenta |
| Liliaceae | onion, Aloe | trimerous, perianth P(3+3), monocot |
6. Key Points
- ⊕ actinomorphic, % zygomorphic.
- Epipetalous: stamens on petals.
- Endosperm absent in pea, present in castor.
- Aleurone layer in maize grain.
Remember: Modifications | inflorescence | 4 whorls | 3 families
